There is a short 2 mile dirt road that is in decent condition. 4-Wheel drive is not needed. Once you get to the trailhead, there are bathrooms and a permitting station. Make sure to fill out a permit and carry it with you while you are on your adventure.

The hike is moderate. 13 mile round trip hike trek, with a small climb in the middle. The first two and a half miles are flat. Hikers hike in and out of the trees, crossing muddy trails with makeshift bridges installed by the forest service. At around the four mile mark, hikers begin the climb. The trail forks in two; Amethyst basin to the left, and Ryder lake to the right. Make sure to stop here and have a snack, the hard part is about to begin. Over the next 1.5 miles, you will climb roughly 1700 hundred feet. But don’t worry, the sounds of a gushing waterfall off the side of the trail keeps you focused on the prize ahead, Amethyst Lake.
